This powerful compound has been
flying under
the radar in the World of Wellness
N-Acetyl L-Cysteine, or NAC |
Haven’t heard of
N-Acetyl L-Cysteine, or NAC? You’re not alone.
This powerful compound has been flying
relatively under the radar in the world of
wellness — and we’re not sure why!
NAC
is a multipurpose supplement that delivers a
variety of benefits to the body, including:
°acting as an
antioxidant,
°strengthening immune defenses and
°supporting fertility,
°liver detoxification and even
°muscle recovery.
|
Among NAC’s many
benefits is one that’s particularly
timely: It may help relieve chronic respiratory
conditions — which preliminary research suggests
could play a pivotal role in supporting,
preventing and treating those with COVID-19.
|
THE SCIENCE
BEHIND NAC
NAC is the supplement form of cysteine, a
semi-essential amino acid, found in high-protein
foods such as : eggs, chicken and turkey.
Often referred to as the building blocks of
protein, amino acids like cysteine are essential
to body function and help with various processes
such as: building muscle or regulating immune
function.
NAC acts as a precursor to glutathione, a
powerful antioxidant that prevents damage from
free radicals on a cellular level. Free radicals
are unstable atoms that cause major damage to
cells by breaking them down, which in turn lays
the foundation for serious illnesses, like
diabetes, cancer and Alzheimers. Antioxidants
(like glutathione) neutralize those free
radicals. In other words, NAC
can help combat cell damage throughout the
body.
|
IMPROVES LUNG
HEALTH
NAC is often used to help fight long-term lung
damage in those with chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD).
NAC replenishes glutathione levels in the lungs,
decreases inflammation in the lungs and bronchi
and loosens mucus in the airways.
Some
researchers even predict that NAC could
potentially decrease the infectivity and
prevent the severity of COVID-19. Several
clinical trials are underway to test its
effectiveness on coronavirus patients.
So in times like
this, especially with colder weather coming,
it’s a great supplement to be taking.
|
STRENGTHENS
IMMUNE HEALTH
Research shows promising results that NAC may
improve immune function by killing viral cells
or blocking their replication. A recent study
revealed that HIV patients supplementing with
NAC saw a significant improvement in their
immune function and natural killer cells.
Another study indicated that NAC may hinder the
replication process of viruses like
the flu, potentially shortening lifespan and
symptoms.
This study revealed that gut microbiota impacts
antioxidant metabolism, regulating glutathione.
Health starts in the gut, the amino acids from
NAC build and strengthen your gut.
Immunity mirrors
the state of your gut health,
so a healthy gut is always
recommended.
|
DETOXIFIES THE
LIVER AND KIDNEYS
NAC also aids in the body’s detoxification
process. Doctors regularly use NAC to combat
kidney and liver damage for people who have
overdosed on the pain reliever acetaminophen
(a.k.a. Tylenol).
NAC may even help prevent side effects from
environmental toxins, such as exposure to
sulfhydryl-reactive metals (mercury, cadmium,
lead, arsenic). These metals deplete
glutathione, inhibit antioxidant benefits and
can even disrupt metabolism. Research continues
to investigate how NAC may be able to counteract
these harmful effects.
|
AIDS BRAIN
FUNCTION AND PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS
Learning, memory and brain function may also
improve because NAC regulates levels of the
neurotransmitters glutamate in the brain.
Healthy levels of glutamate in the brain are
necessary for normal brain function, but excess
levels of glutamate and low levels of
glutathione can be damaging for the brain, which
may magnify mental health conditions like
bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder
and addictive behavior. Although doctors do not
recommend NAC as a sole treatment for mental
health conditions, promising research shows that
NAC may help decrease symptoms of bipolar
disorder, depression and OCD.
Some studies even point to NAC impacting
diseases such as Alzheimers because glutathione
reduces oxidative damage to brain cells that
comes with aging.

This
phase II trial identifies the
effect of N-acetylcysteine in treating patients
who have severe coronavirus disease-2019
(COVID-19) infection that does not respond to
treatment (refractory) and are either patients
in a critical care unit and / or are connected
to a ventilator, or who are not in a critical
care unit but require large amounts of
supplemental oxygen. Recent studies suggest that
the virus that causes COVID-19 may work by
suppressing the immune system, which is the
body's defense against infections and other
diseases. White blood cells called lymphocytes
are an important part of this defense, but
recently it was found that the number of
lymphocytes in a COVID-19 patient’s blood goes
down as the infection gets worse and goes up as
a patient gets better. N-acetylcysteine has been
shown to help increase the number of lymphocytes
in the blood when a virus is responsible for
lowering it. This trial may help researchers
determine whether N-acetylcysteine is effective
enough against the virus that causes COVID-19
such that patients could leave the critical care
unit or be taken off a ventilator, or could be
prevented from needing ventilator support and
management in a critical care unit.

Essential oils
belonging to the mint family, especially those
with higher percentages of menthol like Peppermint
Oil, will help make the body feel cooler.
|
Two of my two
favorite essential oils to use on unbearably hot
days (or anytime that I'm feeling uncomfortably
warm) are Peppermint Oil
and Spearmint Oil.
These oils, however, are really potent, so it's
important to use them sparingly, dilute them
adequately for any topical applications, follow
all safaty guidelines and avoid if
contraindicated.
|
Eucalyptus
acts as a nice alternative or complement to Peppermint
and Spearmint oils
in cooling blends. In addition to its ability to
provide a cooling sensation, Eucalyptus
globulus and Eucalyptus
Radiata Essential Oils contain a
significant quantity of the oxide 1,8-Cineole.
1,8-Cineole is said to act as both an
anti-inflammatory as well as an
expectorant.

Instead of
using manufactured insect repellents -
that use powerful chemicals to keep bugs at
bay,
try these tips to naturally prevent bug bites.
|
Wearlight-colored,
loose-fitting clothing when outside.
You'll lower your chances of popping up on a
mosquito's radar, as these bugs are attracted to
dark colors and easily bite through tight
clothing. Also avoid wearing bright or floral
patterns, as resembling a scrumptious flower can
make you attractive to bees and wasps.
|
Even if you don't
have a pool or pond, you still need to eliminate standing
water around your home, which is an
invitation for mosquitoes to lay eggs near your
abode. Drill holes in the bottoms of things like
trash bins to drain water that may collect in
them. Change birdbaths and pets' water dishes at
least once a week and as often as possible in
the summertime to wipe out any breeding grounds
mosquitoes may have created. Check for other
standing water sources, such as gutters, flower
pots and children's toys.
|
Lemon
balm and
catnip are especially good for warding off
mosquitoes: Researchers
found the essential oil in catnip to be about
10 times more effective at repelling
mosquitoes than DEET, the widely used
synthetic repellent.
|
Make your own
catch-all insect repellent from a concoction of
essential oils:
30 drops of any of the following essential oils:
basil,
cedarwood,
citronella,
juniper,
lemon,
myrrh,
pine,
rose
geranium or rosemary
1 cup 190-proof grain alcohol (available at
liquor stores)
Place ingredients in a jar with a tight-fitting
lid and shake vigorously. Transfer to a small
bottle for storage. To use, rub a small amount
on exposed skin, though test first to make sure
skin doesn't react negatively.
Don't like measuring and mixing -
Try:
Bug Stick
KidCare
Critter Shield
Itch Away
