New Years Resolutions
New Year’s resolutions are
a bit like babies: They’re fun to make
but extremely difficult to maintain.
|
Losing
Weight:
Plan for bumps in the road. Use a food journal
to keep track of what you eat and have a support
system in place.
Essential
oils can be a natural
aid for weight loss and maintenance. They can
have very positive impact on weight loss efforts
when combined with healthy diet and lifestyle.
Some Essential
oils can really help with
weight loss by helping to melt the fat and by
helping the body to carry less toxins.
Several Essential
oils can suppress
cravings, increase metabolism, reduce fluid
retention and helps alleviate emotional stress
and stress eating.
Grapefruit
is one of the best essential oils for weight
loss due to the d-limonene found in grapefruit.
It helps in releasing fatty acids into
bloodstream where the body breaks them down and
uses it for energy. A study conducted on the
protective effects of d-limonene in the animal’s
shows that it helps reduce body weight by
reducing lipid peroxidation (oxidative damage)
and lowering cholesterol.
Peppermint
essential oil
has unique weight loss benefits. It is great for
reducing appetite and helps suppress cravings.
We feel full because of a special mechanism in
our brain and peppermint works on that part of
the brain which triggers the feeling of fullness
when you eat. It is found to be more effective
than any other scent in creating serotonin in
the brain that is linked with cravings for
sweets. A study on the effects of peppermint
scent on appetite control confirms that
participants inhaling peppermint essential oil
were less likely to feel hungry and had fewer
cravings than the ones who didn’t inhale
peppermint essential oil.
Lemon
essential oil
is great for addressing intestinal parasites
that are often a secret cause of weight gain. It
helps in weight loss by dealing with various
digestive ailments, balancing your metabolism
and increasing energy levels. It helps the body
to carry less toxins which it stores in the fat
cells for no good reason.
The Smell & Taste Treatment and Research
Institute of Chicago found that inhaling lemon
and peppermint essential oil
scent is more natural and effective way to
control appetite to help with weight loss.
Ginger
Essential Oil
works because it also reduces sugar cravings
and helps reduce inflammation in the body.
It’s so important that if you’re going to lose
weight, that you’re also reducing
inflammation, and supporting digestion
and absorption of nutrients.
Bergamot
essential oil
this oil is extracted from Italian citrus fruits
and it is perfect for those who eat when they
are stressed. Sedative properties of bergamot
essential oil make
it perfect for fighting with stress related
weight gain and controlling stress triggered
eating. It can be more effective if you pair it
with lavender
essential oil.
Bergamot
essential oil is
very effective in weight control because it
contains extremely large amounts of the
polyphenols (that are also found in green tea).
This polyphenols content is great for fat
oxidation (halt production of blood fat),
increasing metabolism and preventing the
absorption of cholesterol. Bergamot inhibits an
enzyme that is linked to the blood sugar levels,
being more active when sugar is high which
promotes the decomposition of sugar and fats.
Cinnamon
essential oil is
found to promote a feeling of fullness after
meals. It works more as a weight gain preventer
and less of a weight loss plan. It works to
enhance the effect of all other weight loss
essential oils. It helps in breaking down sugar
for absorption into the body as energy, so as a
result the body would have less fatty acids to
store. It is also found to be very effective
against candida which influences weight gain.
Cinnamon helps increase blood circulation,
stimulates the immune system, improves gut
health and irritable bowel syndrome and
metabolism which is why it may be helpful in
weight loss. Cinnamon is also known for its
anti-inflammatory uses and it stimulates the
immune system, and even increases libido.
Sandalwood
essential oil
works great for stress eating. It helps
overcoming negative feelings and behavior so
that you no longer feel tempted to eat more to
deal with stress. |
Quit
Smoking: Fear that
you’ve failed too many times to try again? Talk
to any ex-smoker, and you’ll see that multiple
attempts are often the path to success.
Think of all the money you will save.

In a study with
20 people who were daily users of nicotine
products (cigarettes, snuff, or chewing tobacco)
were asked to try aromatherapy instead. They
were divided into two separate groups and given
an essential oil (either
black
pepper or angelica)
and given instructions to place one drop of
essential oil on a tissue and inhale this for
two minutes (roughly the amount of time it takes
to smoke a cigarette) whenever they felt the
urge to use tobacco. The test subjects reported
back with their experiences and they found that
both essential oils effectively curbed cravings,
but they provoked different responses. It
was reported that the intensity of their
cravings were reduced dramatically after
inhaling black pepper essential oil than
they did with angelica essential oil, but
inhaling angelica essential oil helped to
delay their next nicotine hit for longer than
the pepper. Combined, they effectively helped
to curb the cravings for longer.

Cut the
Stress: A little
pressure now and again won’t kill us; in fact,
short bouts of stress give us an energy boost.
But if stress is chronic, it can increase your
risk of—or worsen—insomnia, depression, obesity,
heart disease, and more.
Stress is an inevitable part of life.
Relaxation, sleep, socializing, and taking
vacations are all things we tell ourselves we
deserve but don’t allow ourselves to have.
Lavender
essential oil
is calming, earthy, lightly sweet and
freshly floral scent, it is widely beloved for
its relaxing and balancing effects on both the
physical and emotional bodies.
Frankincense
essential oil
is comforting warm, exotic aroma, Frankincense's
most common use is stress relief.
Rose essential
oil provides
relief from both stress and depression, it
stimulates the mind and helps promote a sense of
well-being. It has the highest frequency among
essential oils at 320 MHz.
Roman
Chamomile
is is superior in addressing mental anxiety. It
has wonderful calming and relaxing properties
and can help to dispel anger and release old
emotions.
German
Chamomile: Can
dispel anger, clear the mind and bring stability
to one’s emotions.
Cedarwood
essential oil
is known for its calming properties, cedarwood
has been found in clinical tests to be of
benefit to children suffering ADD and ADHD.
Native Americans used cedarwood to communicate
with spirit. Cedarwood stimulates the
limbic region of the brain (centre of emotions)
and the pineal gland, which releases melatonin
(melatonin plays an important role in
establishing sleep cycles). Can be diffused or
applied topically. Best place to apply it is to
the stem of the brain (where the neck joins the
head).
Geranium
is an essential oil that helps relieve tension,
stress and release negative memories (it works
with the liver chakra to release toxins from the
body). It also helps to open the mind to new
ideas.
Marjoram
essential oil:
In folklore, Marjoram was known as the “herb of
happiness” to the ancient Romans and the “joy of
the mountains” to the Greeks. |
Volunteer:
We tend to think our own bliss relies on
bettering ourselves, but our happiness also
increases when we help others. And guess
what? Happiness is good for your health. A 2010
study found that people with positive emotions
were about 20% less likely than their gloomier
peers to have a heart attack or develop heart
disease. Other research suggests that positive
emotions can make people more resilient and
resourceful. |
DIY Deodorant
for Everyone
|
Conventional deodorant antiperspirants
work great, if you don’t mind infusing your
armpits with several of the ingredients used
in most deodorants and antiperspirants that
are not so good for you. Like these:
- Aluminum – This is the
primary ingredient in most stuff you’ll buy
at the store. It’s a metal which has been
linked to breast cancer in women and
increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. No
thanks.
- Parabens – This synthetic
preservative is found in so many personal
care products. The largest concern is that
these chemicals will disrupt our
delicate hormonal balance. Paraben
exposure has also been linked to birth
defects and organ toxicity.
- Propylene glycol – Common
name: antifreeze. This is a petroleum based
material. In large quantities, studies have
shown that this stuff can cause damage to
the central nervous system, liver, and
heart.
- Phthalates – Another
class of chemicals that have been linked to
a variety of health issues including birth
defects.
- Triclsoan – This chemical
is actually classified as a pesticide by the
FDA and a probable carcinogen by the
Environmental Protection Agency.
|
Keep in mind that the recipe
below is NOT an antiperspirant. But that’s a
good thing. You need to sweat.
It’s one of the ways your body naturally
detoxes. Besides, antiperspirant just clogs your
pores to keep the sweat from coming out… but
your body will keep trying to detox. That’s why
antiperspirant leaves those “pit stain” on your
favorite shirt. It’s like your armpit threw up
the chemical junk. |
Adding Essential oils

1 Tablespoon of vinegar
then add enough water to make a paste. Apply to
arm pits for 5 - 20 minutes. wash off. It's that

Deodorant Base 1 – Ingredients
|
- Mix coconut oil and shea butter, combined
in a quart size glass mason jar and place
this in a small saucepan of water until
melted. This will save your bowl and you can

- Remove from heat and add baking soda and
arrowroot (If you don’t have arrowroot, use
more baking soda)
- Mix well
- Add essential oils and pour into a glass
container for storage. It does not need to
be stored in the fridge.
- If you prefer, you can let it cool
completely and put into an old deodorant
stick for easier use, though it may melt in
the summer!
|
Deodorant Base 2 – Ingredients
Mix baking soda and arrowroot together in
a medium sized bowl.
Mash in coconut oil with a fork until well
mixed.
Add oils if desired.

Things I Learned In 2020 |
Goodness Exists
This was a year of struggle. That’s for sure.
But alongside this struggle, I was
consistently struck with how much good there
is in this world, from protesting for what is
right, to volunteering to help those facing
the worst of this pandemic, to our brave and
compassionate health care, service, and
transit workers that continued to put their
lives at risk so that we could continue with
ours – all of it touched my heart. This year
has helped restore my faith in humanity in a
way I have never experienced before.
|
Go With the
Flow
One of my first greatest lessons is to just go
with the flow. Learning how little
control I actually had was a difficult lesson,
but one that I desperately needed to learn. I
can set goals for myself, but I can’t
guarantee that things will be exactly as I
want them to be. And that’s okay. It’s a good
thing. Because they will turn out the way
they’re supposed to. I’m learning to go with
the flow of my life. And it’s been so freeing.
|
We’re in This
Together
I’ve never felt more connected to complete
strangers than I have this year. Here we all
are, from every walk of life, every corner of
the world, experiencing this same pandemic.
We’re suffering, learning, loving through
this. We’re trying to take care of our loved
ones and to stay healthy. We’re mourning the
ones we’ve lost. We’re experiencing these
truly life-changing things together. We share
this incredible bond that can never be broken.
We have so much more in common than we do in
differences. And this feeling of connection,
of responsibility to my fellow human, has
never felt as strong as it has for me this
year.
|
Each One of Us
Can Make a Difference
I’ve felt helpless and hopeless before. I’ve
felt like my voice or vote couldn’t really
make a difference. But I was wrong. This year
has taught me that we can all make a
difference. What I think and feel matters, and
yours does too. I can protest for what I
believe is right. I can help someone smile
today. I can sign a petition I believe in. I
can volunteer my time and change someone’s
day. These are big ways that I can make a
difference. Me. We all can. That’s extremely
powerful. Each one of us can make a real
difference in this world, and this lesson has
helped me feel empowered and hopeful.
|
Don't Wait to
Say ‘Thank you’
I’ve learned to express my gratitude in the
moment. If I’m feeling thankful to someone for
something, I want them to know it then. I
don’t want to wait to say it because I don’t
want to risk them not ever knowing. Life gets
busy and moves so quickly, so it’s really easy
to let that moment or expression of gratitude
pass. I don’t want these moments to pass me
anymore. My gratitude, in general, has grown
this year, but my need to express it to those
special people in the moment is a lesson I’m
so grateful to have learned this year.
|
To Say ‘I Love
You’ To Loved Ones Today
I’ve learned to say I love you every chance I
get. At the end of every phone call or every
time spent together, I’m saying I love you to
those who mean the most to me in life. I want
them to know I love them. And I want them to
know today. I don’t want to wait for the
perfect time to tell them or to worry about
how awkward it may make me feel. I want all my
loved ones to know I love them. And this has
made these relationships in my life so much
fuller and more meaningful.
|
Every Moment Is
Precious
Every second of every day is important. There
is something special about every single
moment. There is purpose in every single
moment. All of it makes up my life, and I want
to feel and really live in every single
moment. I don’t want to let it pass without
notice. I want to be present and really be in
all of it. I want to be mindful of it all and
experience it all. This year has taught me how
precious time is.
|
Life Is
Beautiful
Last but certainly not least, on my list of
things I learned in 2020 » Life is magically
wonderful. I have never known life in quite
the same way before. I have never appreciated
life in quite the same way I do today. When I
wake up, take a breath, I can’t help but feel
grateful to be alive. And I just want to keep
taking in and celebrating all the little joys
this life has to offer. The sunshine, the
smell of baking cookies, a hug from my mom, my
grandmother’s contagious laugh, planting
flowers in the garden – this list of beautiful
and wonderful things goes on and on, and I
hope to never stop thinking about them in this
way.
