Skip Spring Cleaning?
You Could trigger your Allergies or Asthma
Skipping it only leads to further buildup of
dust and dander, which in the end will only
make things worse.
|
As it turns out, if you
suffer from allergies and asthma,
overlooking spring cleaning isn’t so great
for your body. In fact, all that dust and
pet dander can impact your respiratory and
immune systems in a big way.
In addition to all the pollen outside that
can trigger allergies, you also have to
consider what’s going on inside your house
too.
If you suffer from allergies or asthma, a
deep house cleaning in the spring can help
get rid of two top allergy culprits—dust and
mold—and help you and your kiddos breathe
easier.
Harsh chemicals and scents in common
household cleaners can aggravate or trigger
allergy and asthma symptoms.
Make your own using ingredients such as
vinegar, baking soda and essential
oils. Tea
tree oil also has antibacterial
properties that help destroy bacterial,
fungal, and mold particles in the air to
reduce allergy symptoms.
If you have mold or mildew on basement
walls, the American Academy of
Allergy, Asthma & Immunology recommends
two options:
Spray full-strength white vinegar,
with 20 drops Tea
Tree on the walls. Don’t rinse; just
air dry.
Mix 2 cups vinegar with 2 cups of very hot
water, ½ cup salt and 2 cups of borax, and
essential oils. Apply this solution to your
walls, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then
apply solution again, scrubbing with a soft
bristled brush and rinse well with plain
water.

Essential oils work to relieve
allergies |
Many essential oils contain
immune-boosting, expectorant, and
anti-inflammatory properties, which all help
reduce respiratory distress and kill
bacteria. Essential oils work to relieve
allergies by reducing the pain that comes
with your body’s immune system response.
They also reduce the inflammation that
causes most allergic reactions.
Essential oils are ideal for alleviating a
range of allergy symptoms including
sneezing, itchy eyes, runny and stuffy nose,
sinus inflammation, and hay fever. These
oils also provide relief for skin conditions
such as eczema, hives, or itchy, red skin.
Lavender
may help soothe your symptoms during allergy
season thanks to its ability to calm and
reduce inflammation. One study concluded
that the essential oil prevents allergic
inflammation as well as the enlargement of
mucous cells. Lavender
essential oil is known to inhibit the
release of histamine—which is naturally
released when the body responds to
allergens—and inhibits cell proliferation.
Peppermint
is a popular essential oil that provides
relief from nasal congestion. It alleviates
pain and discomfort as well as improves
airflow.
In addition to anti-inflammatory and
antihistamine properties, many essential
oils contain bronchodilating properties
which provide relief from conditions such as
hay fever. Peppermint
essential oil is known to reduce
inflammation. You’ll be able to breathe
easier by diffusing the oil or even applying
it on your skin after it’s diluted with a
carrier oil.
Eucalyptus
is known as an anti-inflammatory and may
help you with your congestion. The cooling
sensation you experience while breathing it
in may also help you feel relief as you
combat seasonal allergies. Eucalyptus
helps clear airways and relieve nasal
congestion, making for easier
breathing.
Steam inhalation of eucalyptus essential oil
can provide relief to those suffering from
asthma attacks, seasonal allergies, or
blocked noses from pet dander.
Tea
Tree oil may help with allergy
symptoms. This is because the oil is
recognized as an anti-inflammatory. This
powerful oil can destroy airborne pathogens
that cause allergies. Diffusing Tea
Tree oil in the home will kill mold,
bacteria and fungi. It is an antiseptic
agent and it has anti-inflammatory
properties. Tea
Tree oil can be applied to the skin to
kill bacteria and microorganisms; it can
also be used as a household cleaner to
disinfect the home and eliminate allergens.
Basil
essential oil reduces the inflammatory
response of allergens. It also supports the
adrenal glands, which are involved in
producing over 50 hormones that drive almost
every bodily function. Essentially, Basil
essential oil is helping your body to react
appropriately to a threat by rushing blood
to your brain, heart and muscles.
Basil
oil also helps to detoxify the body of
bacteria and viruses, while fighting
inflammation, pain and fatigue. Studies
prove that basil oil shows antimicrobial
activity and can kill bacteria, yeast and
mold that can lead to asthma and respiratory
damage.
To support the respiratory system, dilute
2–3 drops of Basil
oil with equal parts coconut oil and apply
topically to the chest, back of neck and
temples.
Lemon
essential oil can also help clear your
sinuses and reduce congestion, common
symptoms of seasonal allergies. Lemon
is used for treating respiratory problems
that are the result of allergic reactions. Lemon
has antioxidant properties that help cleanse
toxins from the body and reduce responses to
allergens.
Lemongrass
essential oil works to eliminate various
allergy symptoms, including a runny or
stuffy nose, wheezing, and sneezing.
Inhaling an infusion of Lemongrass
works to reduce respiratory inflammation.
Bergamot
essential oil may be used for asthma relief
and for treating other allergy symptoms. Bergamot
essential oil has been found to effectively
relieve asthmatic symptoms and cough,
particularly when inhaled. In bronchial
asthma, it works to reduce phlegm.
There are many essential oils that contain
antioxidant, anti-bacterial, and
anti-inflammatory properties. Among the
most powerful antioxidants for
achieving relief from allergic reactions
include cinnamon,
thyme, oregano,
Basil,
clove,
and Peppermint.
When it comes to strong
anti-inflammatory activity, some of
the best options include wintergreen,
Roman
chamomile, and German
chamomile. They also have the added
benefits of acting as relaxants and
analgesics.
