Pain Relief -Using Essential
Oils
|
There are many essential oils for
pain relief, and people who use them seem to
heal more quickly than others. Some essential
oils have analgesic properties, which means that
they have shown to relieve or reduce pain, as
well as anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory and
anti-rheumatic properties. |
Chamomile
is well
known for its effective anti-inflammatory
properties. Helps to relieve muscle pain and
spasms, low back pain, headaches and pain
caused by PMS.
Sweet
marjoram
has sedative properties. Helps to relieve
muscle pain and spasms, stiffness, rheumatism,
osteoarthritis and migraine.
Lavender
this is probably the most famous essential
oil for pain relief and relaxation. It has
anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and sedative
properties and it helps to relieve muscle
tension and spasms, joint pain and headache. Lavender
is also one of my top 5 essential oils for
allergy relief.
Eucalyptus
has analgesic and anti-inflammatory
properties. Good for muscle pain and nerve
pain.
Peppermint
good for muscle and joint pain, headache and
nerve pain.
Rosemary
has analgesic and
antispasmodic properties. Good for relieving
back pain, muscle and joint pain and
headaches.
Thyme
antispasmodic, good for joint and muscle
pain as well as backache.
|
Clary
sage
has calming and soothing properties, as well
as anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory
properties. Helps to ease muscle tension,
spasms and PMS pain.
Sandalwood
relieves
muscle spasms. One of sandalwoods most
important uses is to sedate the nervous
system, so it helps to reduce nerve pain.
Juniper
has antispasmodic
properties. Relieves nerve pain, joint and
muscle aches and spasms. The
juniper berry has anti-inflammatory
properties and its of great help to those
suffering from arthritis, gout and other
diseases such as rheumatism and pain in the
joints and muscles. These joint related
ailments occur because of the fluid
retention around these joints, and the
juniper berry with its diuretic action
relieves this pressure considerably. Juniper
also helps in reviving the muscle tone and
significantly reducing the effects of aging
for most people. Juniper can cause a
miscarriage in pregnant women.
Ginger
can ease back pain and improves mobility.
Can be used to treat arthritic and rheumatic
pain, muscle pain and sprains.
Frankincense
has
anti-inflammatory properties and also acts as
a mild sedative. Its also used to alleviate
stress and relieve pain.
Yarrow
a powerful
restorative and analgesic pain reliever with
powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Good
for muscle and joint aches and pains.
|
Wintergreen
this is not a well
known essential oil, but its very effective
to treat painful conditions including
headache, nerve pain, arthritis and menstrual
cramps. This oil has pain-relieving properties
similar to aspirin (salicylate is the
principal component of aspirin).
Vetiver
It brings
relief to general aches and pains, especially
for rheumatism, arthritis and muscular pain
and headache. Vetiver
essential oil has a lot of health benefits:
it can be used as an antiseptic,
anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial,
aphrodisiac, sedative, and skin healer
substance or tonic.Vetiver
oil is a natural stress reliever that may
promote sleep by helping with restlessness.
It contains well known sedative properties
that may help settle down nervousness,
emotional outbreaks and anxiety.
Helichrysum
this essential oil is
quite expensive and valued for its pain relive
properties. It has anti-inflammatory,
antispasmodic and analgesic properties. It helps
to relieve arthritis pain and supports the
nervous system. Pain relief reported by most
users happens nearly instantly certainly
within minutes of application. |
Cold and
Flu Care
Using Essential
Oils
|
You know the feeling. It
may start with a scratchy throat or with a
few more aches and pains than normal. Or
it could begin with a runny nose and a
feeling of exhaustion. Yes, its a cold
coming on or maybe worse the flu.
|
The flu is
caused by the influenza virus that can
attack the upper respiratory tract.
These viruses are spread through the
air from person to person.
People
with a depressed immune system or
nutrient deficiencies may be more
prone to catching the flu or a cold.
Stress, lack of sleep, and exposure
to toxins can worsen flu symptoms.
|
Here
is our list of essential oils and
essential oil blends that will
help you stay healthy this cold
and flu season. |
Rubbing peppermint
and
frankincense
essential oil to the neck and
bottoms of the feet can
naturally support the
immune system. Also,clove
oil can protect the
body against infection and
can speed recovery from
the flu.
|
Tea
Tree oil has
antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic and
antiviral properties. Used in an inhaler or
in a bath, tea tree oil helps you fight the
congestion and the resulting discomfort
caused by the cold or the flu.
Pine essential
oil,
helps to clear the nasal passages. It also
can be helpful in relieving sore throat
pain.
X Plague
is a blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark,
eucalyptus and rosemary that was created by
15th century thieves during the plague. The
oil blend is antiviral, antiseptic and
antibacterial. It works well in a diffuser
to help purify the air in your home or as a
throat spray to soothe a sore throat.
Healthy
Spice The oils in
this blend help with restoring
health and well being. As an antispasmodic it can
be applied topically to relieve
muscle spasms or in a tea to ease
coughing. It is said a paste of
milk, salt crystals, and Healthy
Spice, can be a great headache
remedy.
Good for
chest and respiratory
problems including coughs,
bronchitis, and chest congestion.
An antiseptic and
disinfectant that prevents the
occurrence of putrefaction
Lavender
essential oil
has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties,
and it is gentle enough for use with
children.
Peppermint
essential oil has
antiseptic and anti-viral properties and can
be useful as an expectorant. Use peppermint
oil in a steam inhaler. Very useful to help
bring down a fever.
Thyme essential oil
is antiseptic and anti-bacterial. Many
aromatherapists recommend you use it in a
blend with tea
tree, lemon and eucalyptus
oils in the bath or in an inhaler to help
fight congestion.
Lemon essential oil
with its high vitamin content, helps boost
the bodys immune system and stimulates the
production of white blood cells, thereby
increasing your ability to fight off
illness. Lemon oil also improves circulation
throughout the body.
As an antiviral and a decongestant, eucalyptus
essential oil
helps treat colds and congestion. Many
aromatherapists recommend using eucalyptus
oil and peppermint,
in a steam inhaler to help open blocked
nasal passages, to soothe inflammation and
to fight bacteria.
Rosemary
works as an antiseptic and an antimicrobial
agent. Try
using a blend of
rosemary, lemon
and eucalyptus
oils to massage the nose, cheekbones and
temples in order to relieve congestion and
discomfort.
|
A great
way to get the benefits of essential oils |
A great way to get the
benefits of essential oils is by
breathing them so that they enter your
body through the nose and lungs. You can
use them in a diffuser or you can simply
add four or five drops of the oil to a
pot of boiled water. Cover your head
with a towel while carefully leaning
over the liquid and breathing in the
steam.
Another option is to place
a drop or two of the oils on a warm damp
washcloth and then place the washcloth
on your chest or your forehead to help
relieve pain and congestion. Or add five
to eight drops of oil to the water as
you run your bath for a soothing,
relaxing effect.
Essential oils are not a
substitute for other proven methods for
fighting colds such as getting enough
fluids, getting enough rest or seeing
your doctor if your symptoms worsen.
However, if you are looking for natural
ways to boost your bodys defenses
during cold and flu season, it is well
worth your time to investigate the
impact essential oils can have on your
health.
|
Try
these natural flu remedies to speed the
recovery and decrease symptoms associated
with the flu. |

Season Allergies
the Advent of Fall |
Many
people find the cooler days of autumn to be
a welcome relief from summers heat. But for
those who suffer from season allergies
particularly allergies to ragweed the
advent of fall can mean simply exchanging
one type of misery for another.
It is
estimated that between 40 and 60 million
Americans suffer from seasonal allergies and
nearly 75 percent of those people have
allergic reactions to ragweed. Other
pollens that are more rampant during the
fall include curly dock, sagebush, pigweed
and sheep sorrel.
An
entire industry revolves around providing
relief for sufferers of seasonal allergies.
Take a walk through any drugstore this time
of year and youre bound to find large
displays of antihistamines and
decongestants. And while these medications
can relieve symptoms, not everyone wants to
reach for a pill. Besides that, some people
have problems with side-effects of these
drugs, such as drowsiness, dry eyes and
mouth, insomnia and abdominal distress.
|
The good news is
that there are natural remedies for
fall allergies: |
Essential Oils
For Allergy Relief
|
Whether
you diffuse them into your room or soak with
them in a nice hot bath, there are also
plenty of essential oils which may prove
beneficial in combating the nasty effects of
fall allergies.
Peppermint
and eucalyptus
oils,
for example, both have anti-inflammatory
properties which can help to unclog stuffy
noses. It is no wonder that eucalyptus oil
is one of the active ingredients in Vicks
vapor rub.
Lemon oil
is another useful essential oil for those
who suffer from hay fever. This oil has been
shown to support lymphatic symptom drainage,
and when diffused into the air can kill
allergy-aggravating bacteria.
Lavender
oil
has both antihistamine and
anti-inflammatory properties, and is
effective in treating headaches and
congestion as well as in helping both the
mind and body to relax.
For
those with seasonal allergies, the arrival
of this time of year can be dreadful.
Fortunately, nature has provided a wide
selection of remedies. Find the one that is
right for you.
|
Also:
|
Neti pot
Some
people cringe at the thought of pouring
warmish salt water in one nostril and
letting it drain out the other and
granted, it does take some practice of
holding your head at just the right angle so
that the water doesnt go down your throat.
But Neti Pots have been around for thousands
of years, and the science behind them is
sound.
When
you use a neti pot, you are gently flushing
allergens out of your nasal passages so that
your bodys natural defenses are able to
work more effectively. (Its like cleaning a
filter.)
Quercetin
Quercetin
is a plant compound that can help relieve
seasonal allergy symptoms by stabilizing
mast cells and inhibiting the release of
histamine. This bioflavonoid can be found in
a number of foods such as onions, tomatoes,
apples, citrus fruits and parsley. However,
to effectively be used as a treatment for
allergies, it usually must be taken in the
form of a supplement.
A
word of caution: You should consult your
doctor before taking quercetin. Also, people
with liver disease should avoid this
supplement.
Stinging nettle
Stinging
nettle can be taken by allergy sufferers
either in a tea or in an herbal supplement.
It contains antihistamine and
anti-inflammatory compounds. In some studies
of stinging nettle and its ability to
relieve allergy symptoms, as many as 57
percent of the participants found the plant
to be as effective as over-the-counter
allergy remedies.
It
has been suggested that stinging nettle
works best when patients begin taking it
before hay fever season begins. If
you decide to forage for and harvest your
own stinging nettle, be sure to wear gloves
to protect your skin from coming into
contact with the herbs stinging hairs.
Butterbur
Butterbur
is another herb that rivals over-the-counter
drugs for effectively treating seasonal
allergies. A study published in 2002 in the British
Journal of Medicinefound that
butterbur was just as effective at relieving
symptoms as was cetirizine, which is the
active ingredient in Zyrtec.Butterbur has
the added advantage of not causing
drowsiness a side-effect that some
patients experience when using Zyrtec.
