How Important
are Enzymes to your Health?
Your Gut is Your Second Brain
|
A person may not have a low
enzyme content because he is
sick or old, but instead, the reason a
person may be sick or old is because of low
enzyme content. |
Your digestive system, immune
system, blood stream, liver, kidneys, spleen,
and pancreas, as well as your ability to see,
think, feel, and breathe, all depend on enzymes.
All of the minerals and vitamins you eat and all
of the hormones your body produces need enzymes
in order to work properly. In fact, every single
metabolic function in your body is governed by
enzymes. Your stamina, your energy level, your
ability to utilize vitamins and minerals, your
immune system -- all governed by enzymes.
Enzymes are your
body's workers. They are responsible for
constructing, synthesizing, carrying,
dispensing, delivering, and eliminating
the many ingredients and chemicals our
body uses in its daily business of living.
Your body makes enzymes. When you were
young, you had an abundant supply of
enzymes. You felt great. Your energy level
seemed never ending. You had "enzymes to
burn" which kept you running at tip top
efficiency.
Enzymes are produced
both internally (most notably in the pancreas
and the other endocrine glands) and are present
in raw foods that we eat.
We're exposed to
harmful substances all the time; they're in
our diet (pesticides, microbes, and mercury,
to name a few) and the very air we breathe
(think disinfectants, deodorizers, and the
gasses released by fresh paint). Fortunately,
we have an excellent system in place to handle
those toxins: Enzymes throughout the body are
continuously breaking them down and helping to
flush them out.
|
Processing and cooking destroy
enzymes in food. There are some enzymes present
from our saliva. The amount, however, is
minuscule since we only chew our food about 25%
as much as is required. The result is that most
of our meals enter our stomachs almost
completely devoid of enzymes.
Your pancreas and
the other organs of the endocrine system
are put under tremendous stress since they
have to draw reserves from the entire body
in order to produce massive amounts of the
proper digestive enzymes. The
less digestion that takes place before
food reaches the small intestine the
greater the stress placed on the
endocrine systems. Recent
studies have shown that virtually 100% of
all Americans have an enlarged pancreas by
the time they're 40. Is it any wonder that
diabetes is so rampant in the United
States.
Regular supplementation
with digestive enzymes takes stress off the
pancreas (and the entire body) by providing the
enzymes required for digestion.
|
Is it
possible that an enzyme can clean up or
“purify” the blood? |
First, consider that fungal
forms, parasites, bacteria, and the shells that
protect a virus are made up of protein. The
enzyme Protease breaks down proteins. Since the
invaders of our blood system are proteins, would
it not make sense that ingesting this enzyme
would do the job of breaking down the protein
invaders?
|
Protein molecules that are only partially digested in the small
intestine are absorbed into the blood
stream. Once in the blood stream, the
immune system treats them as invaders provoking
an immune reaction. Antibodies couple with
these foreign protein invaders to form
"circulating immune complexes".
Now in a healthy person, these "circulating
immune complexes" may be neutralized in the
lymphatic system.
But if the immune system is in anyway
compromised, "circulating immune
complexes" accumulate in the blood, where they
initiate an "allergic" reaction. as the
number of "circulating immune complexes" builds,
the kidneys max out and can no longer excrete
all of the "circulating immune complexes" so
they begin to accumulate in the body's soft
tissues, causing inflammation.
|
It is here that the pancreatic enzymes in our bloodstream come
into play. Pancreatic enzymes are able to break
down "circulating immune complexes" so that they
can pass through the kidneys for excretion. |
If enzymes are taken between
meals, the body doesn't need the enzymes for
digesting food, so they make their way directly
into the bloodstream to aid in the elimination
of "circulating immune complexes". |
Because of their ability to digest foreign proteins, pancreatic
enzymes (both those produced in the body and
those absorbed into the bloodstream from taking
supplemental digestive enzymes) work to clear
out infecting organisms such as viruses, scar
tissue, and the products of inflammation. For
this reason, pancreatic enzymes are frequently
used by Naturopaths to treat a variety of
conditions, including lung infections, tooth
infections, bone fractures, and as a body
strengthener before surgery. Specifically,
pancreatic enzymes have been used by many
healers to aid in a variety of disease
conditions, including inflammation, viral
disease, multiple sclerosis, and cancer. |
When taken consistently,
supplemental enzymes purify the blood by
breaking down its undigested proteins, cellular
debris, and other toxins. With the blood healthy
once again, the body gradually rebuilds itself
and replenishes its storehouse of enzymes.
The ultimate result? a balanced body capable of
functioning at peak efficiency. |
Nutritional Enzyme
Therapy
Enzymes are very useful in treating
various illnesses. They are absorbed by
the body as intact molecules and are
distributed to the body through the
bloodstream as needed supporting the
body's needs against the disease process.
- Bromelain: found in
pineapple is used to decrease
inflammation in arthritis, rheumatism
and muscular-skeletal injury. It is
proven to be more effective than
commonly prescribed nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs and has no
toxic side effects. It is best to use
fresh pineapple in small amounts or
diluted in water or juice, as the
canned or bottled has been heated
and lost its enzymes. Cystic
fibrosis is a disease in which the
pancreas cannot secrete enough
enzymes. This usually accompanies
other glandular disorders affecting
the thyroid, adrenals, spleen and
other glands. It also toxifies the
liver and can be related to bowel
problems, sleep disorders, hormonal
estrogen imbalance and loss of energy.
- Protease: is an enzyme
shown to slow metastasis and
contribute to tumor shrinkage while
protease reduces pain of cancer.
- Lipase & Amylase:
Recent evidence shows that rich lipase
and amylase levels in the blood lead
to a decrease in arteriosclerotic
plaques, thus making enzyme therapy
useful against coronary artery disease
and atherosclerosis.
- Aging and Enzymes:
Enzymes have proven to give elderly
patients more energy, a sense of well
being, better nutrient assimilation,
and resistance to disease. Aging
reduces the ability to produce enzymes
and assimilate nutrients, thus slowing
our ability to heal.
- Enzyme Deficiencies:
Deficiencies in enzymes are often
associated with gastrointestinal
disease, digestive disturbances,
periodic gas and bloating. Meals that
seem to remain in the stomach for
hours or days may be a sign of
illness. An evaluation by your
physician is needed to determine the
cause. Herbal enzyme therapy may be
the cure.

A good general
digestive formula, which also helps the
body to adjust to its proper weight and
works great for weight loss, should
contain betain HCI (increases stomach
acidity), pancreatin and pancrelipase (
digests starches, fats, proteins), papain
(digests proteins), pepsin (digests
proteins), diatase (digest starches), and
Ox Bile (digests fat).

Many herbs are enzyme activators
that enhance enzymatic action
while reducing inflammation, removing
gas and increasing digestion: Fenugreek
(Trigonella foenumgraecum) is one of
these herbs.
Fenugreek
is cleansing to the bronchial passages
of catarrh and other irritants and
extraneous materials. It is useful for
all mucus conditions and for lung
congestion; soothing to inflamed
conditions of the stomach and intestines
and for ulcers; effective as a poultice
on wounds, inflamed areas, boils and
carbuncles. May be used as a lubricant
for the intestines, as a digestive aid,
for fevers, diabetes, gout, and as an
aphrodisiac and rejuvenator. A suggested
dosage of Fenugreek
is two or more 500 mg capsules, 10-15
minutes before meals. If more is needed
you should consult your health
practitioner. It is important that your
physician evaluates persistent digestive
problems.

Incorporating
fermented foods and drinks is another
great way to boost enzyme load.
Eat just
a ½ cup a day to pull toxins and
heavy metals out of your body.
|
Beneficial gut bacteria
play important roles in vitamin production,
mineral absorption, detoxification, and
helping prevent diabetes, digestive issues,
neurological problems, cardiovascular disease,
and more.

Recipe to Make
your own Fermented Veggies
|
To Make Fermented
Veggies:
Many people use whey
as a starter but it is not necessary given
you use enough salt. Salt keeps the
“crunch” in the vegetables. You can also
made salt-free cultured vegetables without
whey as long as you use some sort of acid,
such as lemon juice, to prevent spoilage
before the lactobacilli take over.
Wash and trim the
vegetables, cutting them to the sizes you
want to eat.
For every 5 pounds of
vegetables, you will need 3 Tablespoons of
salt. Layer the vegetables and salt
alternately in the bowl and mix them
thoroughly.
Stuff the mixture into
clean jars, packing aggressively, and
filling them to the neck of the jar. Do
not overfill, as liquids can overflow the
jar.
The packing process
will start to draw liquid from the
produce. To keep the vegetables down in
the jar and below the liquid during and
after fermentation.
I like to add a little
Celery juice at this point. Because;
Celery juice
acts as the perfect post-workout tonic as
it replaces lost electrolytes and
rehydrates the body with its rich
minerals. Celery is known to contain at
least eight families of anti-cancer
compounds. Among them are the acetylenics
that have been shown to stop the growth of
tumor cells. The
polyacetylene in celery is an amazing relief
for all inflammation like rheumatoid
arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, asthma and
bronchitis. Celery promotes healthy and normal
kidney function by aiding elimination of
toxins from the body. While eliminating
toxins, it also prevents formation of kidney
stones.
After you have bottled your
produce, clamp down the glass lid over the
gasket. Store the jar at room temperature.
After about a day, little bubbles will rise
to the top and settle in a ring around the
neck of the bottle. Fermentation has begun.
Once you see a thick necklace of bubbles,
fermentation is well established.
I my wide mouth quart
jar. Also the canister type jars
that have a rubber ring and bail. I don't
use the top for the fermentation
time but it works quite well to ferment in
the jar and then just put the
jar in the refrigerator
with the top sealed when it is done
fermenting. While it is fermenting, I just
rubber band a coffee filter over the top
and put it in a bowl in case it overflows.
I save a few of the nice big cabbage outer
leaves to fold over and insert into
the top .It can be removed if it gets
moldy and another one put into place.
Holds the veggies down nicely Fruit
flies LOVE fermenting veggies so
you have to keep it covered.
You may wish to place
a dish below the jar in case it was
over-filled, as liquid may overflow.

Allergies
A Few
Recipes That Could Help
|
A simple saline rinse will flush
the pollen from your nasal passages and remove
the offending pollen grain. You can use a saline
nasal spray or a netti pot. Netti pots, in my
experience, are much more effective at getting
the foreign particles out. |
Nettle
is a potent anti-inflammatory and has been
traditionally used to treat allergic
rhinitis, itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and runny
nose. Nettle seems to work on allergies because
if its natural anti-inflammatory properties. By
reducing inflammation in the body we also reduce
our auto-immune response to foreign particles.
Nettles are known as a natural anti-histamine
preventing the mast cells from producing
histamine. A quart of nettle leaf tea can be
drunk throughout the day to relieve allergy
symptoms. You can also apply a salve, like my
dry itchy skin salve, containing nettle to
soothe skin irritation, or use nettle tea in
your hair to ease an itchy scalp.
1/4 C Nettle
Leaf
1 inch piece of sliced or grated fresh
ginger (optional)
1 Quart Boiling Water
1 Quart sized mason jar
Put the nettle leaf inside the jar. Put the
chopped up ginger into water and simmer for 20
minutes. Pour the water into the mason jar,
cover, and let sit at least 4 hours. Strain the
leaves and drink throughout the day. I brew our
herbal infusions before we go to sleep so they
can be drunk first thing in the morning. The
ginger can be re-used 3-4 times until the water
no longer tastes of ginger when boiled.
Tincture
of Nettle Leaf is more effective for
allergies
To give your tea the added healing properties
you might add these ingredients; red
clover, fennel,
spearmint,
peppermint,
eyebright,
yerba santa, calendula,
lemongrass,
lavender.
Each herb was added for its particular
healing properties:
|
Green
tea is a wonderful drink
full of antioxidants and vitamins. It has also
been shown to block a key receptor in the
allergic response. |
Bee propolis
is ”a resinous mixture that honey
bees collect from tree buds, sap flows, or
other botanical sources.” It is a
different product than bee pollen which has
other health benefits. It commonly comes in
little yellow granules. Bee propolis has been
shown to inhibit histamine release from the mast
cells and is considered to be effective in
relieving symptoms of allergic rhinisitis and
inhibiting histamine release. |
Spicy foods
like horseradish,
ginger,
cayenne
and other peppers will get the sinuses flowing!
Just add it to the food your eating. They will
help push those invading molecules of of the
sinuses and clear your breathing passages. They
also reduce inflammation in the body decreasing
the puffiness caused by allergens. |
What can’t apple cider vinegar
do? Raw (with the mother) apple cider vinegar
has been used for centuries to treat everything
from itchy skin to allergies, eczema, digestive
complaints and a whole host of other issues.
Take a tea spoon of apple cider vinegar 2-3
times a day to reduce allergy symptoms. You can
also apply it topically to ease itchy dry skin
and scalp. |
Natural Allergy Relief Drink
1 Tbs local honey
1 Tbs raw organic apple cider vinegar
warm water
Local Honey- is honey that is grown
closest to wear you live (I’ve hear it should be
within 20 miles). Bees collect pollen from your
area and it ends up in your honey. Then it
builds up in your system and you can become
immune to the pollen in your area. Thus,
decreasing your allergies. It might not work for
everyone.
|
Here is a weird trick:
My daughter puts Vaseline on eyelashes to catch
the pollen before it gets into her eyes, also
showering often to keep pollen at bay.
|
Quercetin is a
plant-derived flavonoid found in
fruits, vegetables, leaves and grains. It
has been shown to control the release of
histamine and other chemicals that initiate the
allergic response. It is effective against
allergies, hay fever, hives, and watery eyes.
|
A good defense would be to start
taking a product earlier, if you are going to go
with a natural remedy; like a couple of weeks
before Allergy season.

There are many Essential Oils
that are beneficial to Allergies and many
overlap in these properties. Some of my
favorites are: |
- Eucalyptus
It is widely used as an
effective decongestant and expectorant
(whether ingested, inhaled or rubbed
topically on the skin), and these properties
dilate the bronchial tubes and help to
loosen and expel phlegm and congestion from
the respiratory system and nasal
passages. When inhaled, Eucalyptus
prompts the Eustachian tubes connecting the
middle ear and the throat to open, and when
fluids drain from the ear as a result,
earache pain and pressure is often
relieved. When used topically in vapor
rubs, the oil (diluted with a carrier oil,
since it is very strong) may be rubbed
directly on the chest, back or down the
sides of the throat to relieve congestion or
pain. Eucalyptus is famous for its
antiseptic, antibiotic, antiviral and
germicidal properties, and it is thought to
be the most powerful disinfectant in its
class. The oil and resin's
antibacterial qualities are so strong that
it has been used for sterilizing medical
and surgical equipment.
- Ravintsara
is analgesic, anti-allergenic,
anti-spasmodic and an expectorant. It is a
better option to use for young children as
it is not as harsh as eucalyptus. I find it
blends nicely with lemon,
ginger
and peppermint
for allergies and chest congestion.
- Lemon
is wonderful to clear air pollution. You
can diffuse lemon
alone, or paired with peppermint
and
eucalyptus to clear the air and ease
allergy symptoms. It is also a wonderful
tool to use when cleaning the home,
dusting, and polishing furniture.
- Peppermint
is analgesic, anti-inflammatory,
antispasmodic and invigorating. Dilute 1-2
drops of peppermint
in a teaspoon of carrier oil and rub it
along the throat and on the chest to
reduce the symptoms of cough and
congestion. Diffuse peppermint
to ease allergy symptoms.
- Ginger
is wonderful to clear mucous and reduce
the symptoms of sinusitis, sore throats
and inflammation. I dilute it with a
carrier oil, and rub down the outside of
my throat, and on my neck.
- Roman
chamomile is anti-inflammatory,
anti-spasmoditc, calming and relaxing. It
is wonderful to use to ease a cough that
just won’t stop. Avoid chamomile if you
are allergic to ragweed.
- Myrrh
is anti-inflammatory and is traditionally
used to treat congestion. It is a wonderful
addition to an allergy blend when chest
congestion is present.
- Respiratory
Sinus Relief blend by
Garden Essence. I personally use Respiratory
Sinus Relief when I am suffering
from allergies. It helps open up my
breathing passages and eases tightness in
my chest. It contains Eucalyptus (4
kinds), Myrtle,
Marjoram,
Pine,
Cypress,
Lavender,
Spruce,
Peppermint.
