How do bacteria
become antibiotic resistant?
|
Antibiotic resistance is a genetic trait,
like brown hair or blue eyes, but unlike these
traits, antibiotic resistance transfers very
quickly between one bacteria and
another. Somehow (and as I understand
it, scientists are still trying to figure this
out) bacteria communicate with each other
extremely rapidly, and through this
communication they are able to transfer
survival traits.
In a study by Dr. Stuart Levy and his
colleagues, they found that introducing
antibiotics into chicken feed very quickly
promoted the spread of antibiotic resistant
bacteria in the chickens’ intestinal tracts, as
well as the intestinal tracts of the people
working with the chickens. The chickens’
guts changed within a week, the farm workers in
3-6 months. Further, the bacteria sampled
were not only resistant to tetracycline (the
antibiotic used), but several other commercial
antibiotics – they had learned and
adapted. (Personally, this freaks me out.) |
The good news –
after they stopped using the antibiotic laced
feed for six months, no detectable levels of
tectracycline resistant organisms were found in
the farm workers. |
How are herbal antibiotics different from
pharmaceutical antibiotics?
|
Many pharmaceutical antibiotics
are isolated chemical constituents. They
are one compound/one chemical – penicillin is
penicillin, tetracycline is tetracycline and so
on. This makes them easier for bacteria to
adapt to and counteract. In contrast,
herbs are much more complicated. Garlic
has over 33 sulfur compounds, 17 amino acids and
a dozen other compounds. Yarrow has over
120 identified compounds. (It makes me
look at my herbs with a new appreciation.)
In plants, the whole appears to be more than the
sum of its parts. The different compounds
work together, often to produce better than
expected results.
|
Top 15 Antibiotic Herbs
|
|
There is much, much more to learn
about herbal antibiotics, but I just wanted to
give you a brief overview and let you know that
herbs can be effective remedies, sometimes even
for infections that don’t respond to “standard”
treatments. Always exercise caution when
using herbs as medicine, and be doubly careful
if you are on any prescription medication. |
I’ll
share a few that I use regularly. |
Aloe
vera: is active against
Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonos aeruginosa,
and herpes simplex virus type 1 and type
2. Aloe and honey are two of the most
effective treatments for burn victims when
applied externally to speed wound healing and
prevent infection. Aloe is used simply by
slicing open the leaves of the fresh plant to
get at the sap and applying the aloe gel to the
wound or burn until well covered, repeating as
necessary. |
Cinnamon:
a team of surgeons found that a solution made
with cinnamon oil killed a number of common and
hospital-acquired infections, like streptococcus
and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus,
or MRSA. German research claims cinnamon
“suppresses completely” the bacteria that causes
urinary tract infections and the fungus
associated with yeast infections as well.
I like to keep a pan of warm apple cider on the
stove with cinnamon in it and give it to the
kids to drink it is an effective way to get it
down.
|
Garlic:
is active against Tuberculosis, Shigell
dysenteriae, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonos
aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli (E.coli),
Streptococcus spp., Salmonella spp.,
Campylobacter spp., Protues merbilis, herpes
simplex, influenza B, HIV and tested against
viruses - it is an excellent virus killer!
Garlic make be taken fresh (as juice or as
cloves), in capsules, as tincture, or in
food. Start with small doses and gradually
increase. Raw garlic may cause stomach
upset and even induce vomiting, if taken without
food, so be careful. Small, frequent doses
are generally easier to take than large doses
(1/4 to teaspoon juice as needed).
Capsules may be better tolerated and easier to
take. Ample garlic in food is also
helpful. Watch out for garlic and blood
thinning medication. |
Grapefruit
Seed Extract: Since Grapefruit Seed
Extract is made from all-natural ingredients, it
can be used to fight bacteria both internally
and externally. When taken as an oral dose, it
is effective at combating the bacteria that can
cause diarrhea and stomach upsets, like
salmonella and E Coli, as well as having
protective qualities for the pancreas. It is
even said to alter the pH of the blood, which
makes it an inhabitable place for some fungi
(like the candida fungus) and viruses to take up
residence. |
Echinacea:
is active against Staphylococcus aureus,
Streptococcus spp., mycobacterium
(tuberculosis), abnormal cells (direct
application necessary). It has been
recommended it for abnormal pap smears, strep
throat, and very early onset of colds and
flus. For strep throat and heading off
colds and flus, I would recommend the use of echinacea
tincture, 30 drops (full dropper) each
hour. I have also had success fighting off
a cold with a steady stream of echinacea tea.
|
Honey: has long been
acknowledged for its antimicrobial properties.
Traditional remedies containing honey were used
in the topical treatment of wounds by diverse
ancient civilizations. Honey inhibits
wound-infecting bacteria. Honey supplies the
nutrients necessary for healthy tissue
regeneration and stimulates the growth of new
blood capillaries. The antibacterial properties
also provide a barrier to cross-infection of
wounds. Honey's high sugar content has an
osmosis effect on wounds. It draws lymph out to
the cells while absorbing moisture and provides
an anti-inflammatory action which reduces
swelling and pain |
Juniper:
is used as a mild diuretic to treat urinary
problems. Juniper detoxifies the system and
helps prevent the buildup of uric acid in cases
of gout and rheumatoid arthritis. |
Licorice:
is active against malaria, tuberculosis,
Bacillis subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus,
Streptococcus sobrinus, S. mutans, Salmonella
typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Candida
albicans, Vibrio cholera, Trichophyton
mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, Toxocara canis, and
coughs.
Licorice is a powerful immune system
stimulant and antibiotic, and works well with
other herbs. It does have side effects,
especially with overuse. I have found in
practice that the use of the whole root does
in fact produce fewer side effects than the
extracts. However, some of the same side
effects still occur: higher blood pressure,
water retention. These occur with less
frequency and generally occur in those of
middle age – i.e. those who have gone through
menopause. Should be used with caution in
those with high blood pressure.
|
Wormwood:
exhibits properties that are beneficial to boost
the immune system. Consumption of wormwood will
aid the body to rid itself of toxins, which is
beneficial in fighting fevers and infections.
For maximum benefit, wormwood can be mixed with
mint to make it more palatable and then consumed
to treat the flu, lasting fevers and food
poisoning. The antiseptic properties of woodworm
are to destroy viruses and bacteria that can
cause fevers. |
Essential Oils that
build your immune system:
|
Rubbing X-Plague
on the bottom of my feet, works wonders at
boosting my immune defenses.
Some Essential Oils that are antibiotic and
bactericidal, for fighting bacteria infection :
basil,
eucalyptus,
lemon,
lemongrass,
myrrh,
neroli,
niaouli,
palmarosa,
tea
tree, and rose.

Happiness Creates Wealth
Happiness and wealth are part of a
cycle, each one creating more of the other.
|
You can increase the amount of
happiness in your life within minutes, simply by
taking more notice of things that make you
happy. |
It's easy to forget that the mere fact of
conscious existence--that you are alive--is
itself a miracle. As the old saying goes
"every day above ground is a good day."
|
Rather than thinking of illness as something
bad that happens to you, start thinking of
health as something good that's happening to
you.
|
There is nothing more conducive
to long-term happiness than knowing that your
actions are making the world a better place. |
Almost everyone has friends, although it's
easy to lose track of them in the rush of
events. Take a few minutes--today--to
reconnect with some of them.
|
If you've got a good relationship
with your family, rejoice! You're experiencing
one of the deepest sources of happiness on the
planet |
Feeling secure that you can count
on yourself to accomplish what you set out to
accomplish creates a quiet but potent happiness. |
Having the support of a wider
group makes you more aware that you're part of
something greater than yourself. |
Gratitude
|
Rather than focusing on what you
don't have or what's out of reach, be thankful
for the wonderful things already in your life. |
Laughter
|
It is impossible to laugh and be
miserable at the same time. Regular doses of
laughter are more than medicine... it's the
flavor of life. |
love
|
Create these ten things in your
life and I guarantee that you'll either become
more wealthy or, if not, you won't really care
anyway because you'll already have what's
important. |
Many
chronic medical issues stem from an allergic response
our body is having to toxins. Toxins that our
bodies are bombarded
with every day
from our drinking water, to our health and
beauty products, to the materials used to
build and furnish our homes!
|
Cold
and Flu
Your immune system launches an inflammatory
storm to fight off the invaders.
|
Just 2 weeks of this total-body
inflammation--which is the time it takes to
recover from a bad cold or the flu--can increase
your long-term risk of heart disease, cancer,
and diabetes. - Doctors have long noticed that
heart attacks spike during the winter, and while
that may be due in part to all that snow you
have to shovel, it's more likely because of the
flu.
Flu is thought to cause an inflammatory process
in the blood vessels, particularly in those
people who have narrowing of the arteries due to
coronary heart disease.
Plaques in the arteries are more likely to
rupture when someone contracts the flu, and that
could trigger a heart attack.
|
Cardio exercise
can increase your immune system. Every
bout of exercise enhances circulation of key
immune cells. |
Neti Pots: Keep
your nose clean. When flu patients squirted a
saline solution into their nostrils three times
a day for 8 days, they recovered about 2 days
faster, a recent study from China found. Why?
Nasal irrigation may rinse out the virus as well
as inflammatory molecules. Use a saline
solution, but
be careful--two deaths have been linked to
irrigation with amoeba-contaminated neti pots.
Use only distilled water or H2O you boiled
first. When you're done, clean the container
with fresh disinfected water and let it
air-dry. |
Take
vitamin
D. People with low circulating levels of
vitamin D may have impaired infection-fighting
responses because their blood has less of the
virus-killing compound cathelicidin. A
shortage of sunlight from October through
March means your body may be unable to
manufacture enough vitamin D on its own. So
during the cold-weather months, supplement
your diet each day with 600 to 5,000 IU of
vitamin D3. |
Garlic:
In a new study in Clinical Nutrition, people who
took a daily garlic supplement for 3 months
experienced 21 percent fewer cold symptoms than
those on a placebo. Credit garlic's ability to
prime natural killer cells and T cell--both part
of your immune system's first line of
defense--to respond faster and with more force
when viruses attack, says study author Susan
Percival, Ph.D. You don't have to eat a clove of
garlic. Just pop a supplement that contains 2.6
grams of garlic extract every day. |
Silver Sol --
Possibly one of the most important medical roles
for colloidal silver is it's ability to destroy
pandemic flu viruses and deadly pathogens like
methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus, or
MRSA. Colloidal silver not only stops bacteria
and the flu virus in its tracks after being
infected, but protects against contagion. Take
colloidal silver prophylactically as soon as you
experience the first symptoms of illness to ward
off a full-blown attack. Prophylactic treatment
involves adults taking a teaspoon or two daily
during flu season. Children can take one-half to
one teaspoon daily depending on age and
weight.?.
Garlic tea -- A well-known immune system
strengthener, garlic shines as an antibacterial
and antiviral for fighting colds, coughs and
especially the flu. One of the best ways to take
advantage of garlic's healing properties is by
drinking fresh garlic tea sweetened with a
little raw honey. Take a little Chlorophyll
after taking garlic to sweeten your breath. Chop
fresh garlic put on the bottom of your feet, to
absorb it's wonderful properties.
Chicken soup -- Take advantage of the
high antioxidant properties and nutrients to
fight the flu by eating lots of chicken
soup. In addition to vitamins and minerals
found in vegetables, bone broth made by cooking
chicken home-made is a strong immune system
builder and provides numerous trace minerals to
support healing. Use organic chicken and
vegetables to obtain the best of the nutrients
provided.
Fenugreek
tea It is a fine expectorant that
relieves asthma and sinus problems by reducing
mucus and is also good for coughs and cold.
Fenugreek dissolves hardened masses of
accumulated mucus and is considered a treatment
for tuberculosis. As a body cleanser and
expectorant, Fenugreek is said to expel toxic
waste and mucus through the elimination system.
Mullein -- Tea made from the herb Mullein
relieves chest congestion from coughs, colds and
the flu. It acts as an expectorant, loosening
trapped mucous in airways and soothing painful
sore throats. Mullein supports the immune system
as well, during the flu and may be used
prophylactically to prevent flu by drinking the
tea daily during an epidemic.
Gelsemium -- Used to alleviate general
flu symptoms, homeopathic Gelsemium is indicated
for aches and pains, weakness, dizziness,
shaking, occipital headache at the back of head
and neck, drowsiness, paralysis, drooping eye
lids.
Belladonna -- Homeopathic Belladonna is
indicated when the onset of flu illness is
sudden and very intense, high fever, red face,
pulsating veins and throbbing headache often
worse on the right side, stiff neck, hot,
glassy-eyed, delirious, lack of thirst.
Bryonia -- Bone and muscle pain made
worse from any motion indicates homeopathic
Bryonia along with other symptoms such as
chills, fever, headache, thirst for large
quantities of cold water, painful cough, dryness
of mucus membranes.

Chlorella is a potent detox agent
for mercury and other heavy metals. In one
animal study, mice given chlorella along with
methylmercury excreted about twice the amount
of mercury compared to those not given
chlorella. |
Unusual uses for Olive Oil
|
Fix a Squeaky Door:
Forget going out and purchasing WD-40. Dab a
little olive oil in your squeaky door hinge and,
voila, the squeak is gone!
Floor Polish: Mix 3/4 part
lemon and 1/4 part vinegar to the oil for a wood
polish. Wipe your floor with the mixture and it
will shine like never before!
Shaving Cream: Run out of
shaving cream? This oil can provide a safe and
natural lubricant that will ensure a close
shave.
Remove Stickers: Rub olive oil
onto a sticker or label and let it sit for a few
minutes. Grab an edge and the sticker will peel
right off. No scraping needed, and best of all,
no sticky residue left behind
Shine Stainless Steel and Brass:
Dab some olive oil on a clean rag to make your
brass and stainless steel shine. It also will
prevent streaks, corrosion, and tarnish.
Cat Care: Place a teaspoon of
olive oil in your cat’s food. It will help stop
hairballs and promote a shiny, healthy
coat of fur.
Furniture Polish: Olive oil
will help you remove dust on furniture, all
while giving it a shine. Place in a teaspoon
lemon juice and it creates a non-toxic and
petroleum-free polish that will also gently
clean wood surfaces
Fix Stuck Zipper: Apply olive
oil to a cotton swab and gently apply to the
teeth of your stuck zipper. Then slowly pull the
tab down the zipper.
Remove Paint: After certain art
projects, paint becomes stubborn if left on skin
for too long. Use some olive oil and the paint
will come right off.
Lamp: Purchse specially made
olive oil lamps, or simply pour it into a glass
mason jar and poke a hole in the lid. Add a wick
and you have yourself a DIY oil lamp!
Eye Make-up Removal: Even the heaviest,
drag-show-worthy makeup job can’t stand up to
the removal power of olive oil. Dab a little on
a cotton pad and your eyeshadow, eyeliner and
mascara – including waterproof formulas – will
wipe right off.
Hair Treatment: Sure, you could buy a
fancy commercially-prepared hot oil treatment
for your hair – or you could just grab the
bottle of olive oil that’s already sitting on a
shelf in your kitchen. Apply a few tablespoons
of warmed olive oil to damp hair, massage into
the scalp and rub through the ends, then leave
it on for thirty minutes to an hour. The oil
will clean and condition the scalp, soften the
hair and help the cuticles lay down flat for a
sleek look.
Skin Moisturizer: You might think using
olive oil as a moisturizer would leave you with
oily skin, but that’s not the case. Used in
small amounts, it seeps in completely,
eliminating dryness and reducing the appearance
of wrinkles without clogging pores.
Bath Oil: Add a few drops of your
favorite essential oils to 3-4 tablespoons of
olive oil and you’ve got a custom bath oil that
will gently scent and moisturize your skin.
Throat Soother: Got a big singing
performance or speech coming up? Swallow a
tablespoon of olive oil just before you step on
stage and you won’t have to clear your throat
nearly as often. This trick also works to soothe
itchy throats and lubricate the back of the
mouth and tonsil area, which may lessen snoring.
Ear Ache Relief: A little warm olive oil
is a fast, effective means of relieving painful
ear aches. Just place the bottle in a bowl of
warm water for a few minutes, then pour a few
drops into the affected ear. To cure ear
infections, infuse the olive oil with a crushed
clove of garlic, strain the garlic out and drip
into the ear.
Lice Treatment: Olive oil has long been a
preferred natural treatment to eliminate dreaded
head lice. It reportedly helps to dissolve the
exoskeleton of these little parasites, and
smother the ones that are resistant. Pour it on
to dry hair liberally, comb out any visible lice
with a nit comb and then leave it on under a
shower cap for up to 8 hours. Follow by coating
the hair in apple cider vinegar; leave it on
overnight, shampoo as usual and then comb out
any remaining eggs.
Hairball Prevention: Nobody likes the
sound of a cat loudly hacking up a hairball,
especially since it always seems to happen when
you’re trying to eat or sleep. Help it pass
through your cat’s system more easily by adding
1/4 teaspoon of olive oil to his or her food
each day.
Chewing Gum Remover: Whether your child
comes home from school with a mass of sticky
pink bubble gum in her hair or you find yourself
the victim of a wayward wad, you don’t have to
resort to any crazy tricks or – gasp – scissors
to get it out. Apply olive oil to the gum and
the surrounding hair, leave it on for five to
ten minutes and then pull the gum out.
Psoriasis and diaper rash treatment: Olive
oil soothes itchy, burning, irritated skin and
may help rashes heal. Apply it to a baby’s
diaper rash or directly to any eruptions on your
own skin for quick relief. Consuming olive oil
on a regular basis may also be helpful in the
treatment of mild to moderate psoriasis.
