Formaldehyde
Exposure
Through the largest organ of your
Body
|
Formaldehyde
found in: carpets, furniture, vaccinations, some
bed materials, some wood material.
|
Since August 2010, health agencies have been
investigating the potential risk of
formaldehyde exposure from a variety of hair
straightening products, especially products
marketed as keratin-based.
|
Many
keratin-based hair smoothing products contain
formaldehyde. Because of the way the
formaldehyde reacts in these products, some
manufacturers, importers, or distributors might
list other names for formaldehyde on product
information or might claim that the product is
"formaldehyde-free." Formaldehyde might be
listed as methylene glycol, formalin, methylene
oxide, paraform, formic aldehyde, methanal,
oxomethane, oxymethylene, or CAS Number 50-00-0.
All of these are names for formaldehyde under
OSHA's Formaldehyde standard.
|
What are the
dangers of formaldehyde? First of all
it is both a naturally occurring and an
industrially created chemical. It is a colorless
gas, you cannot see, smell or taste it. When you
are exposed to high concentration levels it can
have negative effects on your health. You can
inhale it or absorb it through your skin. Your
largest organ.
|
Symptoms of
Exposure: Watery, burning eyes, nose
and throat, asthmatic attacks, skin irritation,
headaches and nausea are all possible short term
side effects of formaldehyde exposure. Long term
effects include cancer and possibly leukemia.
Most products contain only very small amounts of
harmful chemicals. The danger lies in our modern
habits of using many of these products, and for
a long time. As you surround yourself with more
and more formaldehyde containing products your
exposure level increases. Similarly, the longer
you expose yourself to these products the more
exposure you are getting.
|
Below are some
Natural Ways to Clean your hair without the
harmful exposure to this dangerous chemical.
|
Clarifying
Shampoo
Here's a baking soda shampoo recipe which will
clean your hair and help get rid of dirt, oil or
conditioner build up. You can just take Complete
Tissue Shampoo and add 3-4 tsp of baking soda
and juice of half lemon to it. Mix well and use
it to wash your hair. Rub it thoroughly over
your hair and scalp. Rinse it thoroughly with
cold water, so that no residue is left. Finish
by applying a rinse of 1 tablespoon of apple
cider vinegar and then rinsing it off with
water. This clarifying shampoo will not leave
your hair dry as the clarifying shampoos
available in the market do.
For Regular Wash
If you are wondering how to make baking soda
shampoo recipe for regular wash, here's the
answer. Take 1/2 cup of baking soda and 2-4
drops of your favorite essential
oil, Rosemary
(I use Eucalyptus
and Peppermint.)
would
be an excellent choice, and add it to wet hair.
Apply it thoroughly, all over your hair and
scalp. Rub your scalp with finger tips, in
circular motion. Now run a wide-tooth comb
through your hair to help this paste spread over
your hair. Wait for 1-5 minutes and wash off
with cold water. Make sure no residue is left
behind. Air dry your hair and style hair as
usual. I have been washing my hair with baking
soda water, with a couple of drops of peppermint
and eucalyptus
essential oils then rinsing with 1-2 tablespoons
of apple cider vinegar in 1 cup of water -then
rinse well - for a while now and my hair feels
cleaner and more manageable than ever before.
(My sisters and kids are asking what new product
I am using.)
Leave in conditioner
1/2 cup aloe vera - 1/2 cup water - 2 drops
jojoba a few drops of vegetable glycerine
2 drops peppermint
essential oil and 2 drops eucalyptus essential
oil or your favorite essential oil.
For Frizzy Hair
For curly, fizzy or unmanageable hair, here's
something you need to use with a regular wash of
baking soda shampoo. Take 1 cup of white vinegar
and 1 cup of warm water. Once you rinse with
baking soda according to the above mentioned
procedure, take the mixture of vinegar and water
and apply it over your hair. Leave it for about
10 minutes. Now, wash off your hair with cold
water. This vinegar and baking soda shampoo
recipe will help you have shiny and manageable
locks.
For Dry Hair
If your hair is extremely dry, here's an
addition to the baking soda shampoo recipe. Add
2-3 tsp of honey to the paste of baking soda,
water and your favorite essential
oil
drops and use it in the same way to wash
your hair. Rinse and follow with vinegar wash.
Finish with cold water rinse to get smooth hair.
You can vary the amount of honey as required.
For extremely dry hair, honey and olive oil mask
can be applied on the hair for 30 minutes.
Follow by use of baking soda homemade shampoo to
cleanse hair and vinegar for conditioning hair.
Dry Shampoo for Oily Hair
Well if you are running late and don't have time
to shampoo, dry and style hair, here's an easy
way to get rid of greasy and oily locks. Try
this dry shampoo for hair that is prepared by
using baking soda. Mix 1 part baking soda with 1
part corn starch, add 3 drops of essential
oil to it. Now apply this mixture from
roots till the tips of hair and comb thoroughly
with a fine comb. Get ready with fresh and
oil-free hair.

A
parasite
transmitted through blood transfusions |
There are a lot of things that can go wrong
when you are going to have surgery. But
one of the few things that's supposed to be
safe is the blood supply, right? After
all, blood donations are screened for seven
infectious agents, including HIV and
hepatitis. But now new research has
found that there is a tick parasite that has
been transmitted through blood transfusions
appearing in the blood supply.
Babesia, carried and transmitted by deer
ticks throughout the Northeast and northern
Midwest United States, is now the most
commonly reported infectious agent spread by
blood transfusion, according to a study
performed at the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention in Atlanta.
And this is not an infection for which blood
donors are being screened.
In their analysis of patient records, the
researchers found 162 cases of babesia that
were transmitted by transfusion between 1979
and 2009. Of those infected, there were
27 fatalities. However, it is not
possible at this time to pinpoint how many of
them died from the babesia as opposed to their
previous illness or complications from
surgery.
Lyme disease is a
multi-faceted recurrent illness caused
by the tick borne spirochete Borrelia
burgdorferi and its co infections,
Babesia.
Babesia
can live in the blood and tissues, and
in the white and red blood cells. It has
a least 4 forms, granular, spirochete,
cell wall deficient, and cyst phase. The
cyst phase can lay dormant for at least
11 months and maybe longer. It also
develops blebs, which detach from the
spirochete. The blebs are composed of
chromosomal material. It is a gram
negative anaerobic organism. There is
also reported in the early literature of
a concomitant virus found in the deer
along with Babesia. The Babesia
loves fatty tissues and can bore through
tissue. Babesia can live inside the red
blood cells.
The condition affects all
systems of the body and can present in
some of following ways:
Random mild to severe pains
in the large joints
Gout like symptoms
Random localized numbness and burning on
the surface of the skin
Skin rashes that look like psoriasis or
other strange aberrations
Fever of unknown origin
Digestive complaints, nausea and
vomiting
Diarrhea
Constipation
Debilitating Fatigue
High blood sugar/ cellular resistant
diabetes/ sugar and carbo craving/wht
gain
Severe headaches including migraines,
meningitis
Stabbing pain and heaviness in the eyes
Bells palsy can be both sides
Trembling of the limbs and head
Severe pain in the back of the neck and
spine
Paralysis of the entire body or parts
Insomnia and nightmares
Uncontrollable anger and depression
Schizophrenia
Phobias
MS
Parkinson
Confusion
Loss of short term memory
Poor concentration
Reduced task completion
Brain fog
Burning and red (infected) eyes
Chronic cough/asthma
Nosebleeds
Aggravation during menses due to
cyclical immune functions changes
Vertigo/dizziness
Panic attacks
Tinnitus
Pins and needles, numbness of
extremities
Highly sensitive to touch
Sore throat
Low body temperature
Cellular resistance to insulin, high
blood sugar
Sensitivity to change in the weather
This is an illness of a
thousand manifestations
The
following herbs, supplements, and dietary
recommendations may also be a part of your
treatment plan. Although they are widely used
for intestinal parasites.
SPK
Formula (old name
Spirokete) by Hanna Kroeger
Cloves
it is the only thing I know of that will kill
the eggs.
Vitamin
C,
Echinacea,
Parasite treatment can be successful with
things such as wormwood,
cloves,
garlic,
pumpkin seed, black
walnut, pomegranate, bayberry, etc.
All while doing this you Rosemary
should be using cyst busters such as Grapefruit
seed extract.
Garlic (Allium sativa) has been found
to have activity against Ascaris (roundworm),
Giardia lamblia, Trypanosoma, Plasmodium, and
Leishmania.
Garlic is available in capsules
and as whole garlic cloves.
2) Cloves
cloves is the herb that will penetrate the egg
of the parasites so your body can
eliminate and pass them.
The herb goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis)
has been used historically for infections
involving the mucous membranes in the body,
such as respiratory tract infections.
Preliminary lab studies suggest that
berberine, the active constituent of
goldenseal, is active against Entamoeba
histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Plasmodium.
Black walnut is a folk herbal remedy used for
ringworm and athlete's foot. The juice of
unripe hulls of black walnut that are used for
parasites and fungal infections. Supports
microorganism resistance; intestinal and
blood. I've been using herbal dewormers
(wormwood, tarragon, thyme, and Black Walnut)
and have done parasite counts before and after
treatment with both drugs and the herbs, and
I'm much more satisfied with the herbal
results.
The herb wormwood (Artemesia annua)
has been used for centuries as a herbal remedy
for intestinal parasites. Preliminary research
suggests wormwood may have activity against
Ascaris lumbricoides, Plasmodium, Schistosoma
mansoni, and Giardia.
Wormwood contains sesquiterpene lactones,
which are thought to weaken parasite
membranes.
Wormwood can be found in tea, liquid extract,
or capsule form, however, the pure oil is
considered toxic and should not be ingested.
6) Wormseed
Wormseed (Chenopodium ambrosioides) is
a traditional herbal remedy in the tropics for
expelling roundworms, hookworms, and
tapeworms.
Concentrated wormseed oil is too potent to
use, so many herbalists consider wormseed tea
to be preferable.
Traditionally, pumpkin seeds (Curcubita
pepo) have been used as a remedy for
tapeworms and roundworms.
Herbalists often recommend large amounts, up
to 25 ounces for adults. The seeds are often
mashed and mixed with juice. Two or three
hours after consuming the pumpkin seeds, a
laxative is often recommended to help cleanse
the intestines.
Grapefruit seed extract is usually found in
liquid form in health food stores. When the
FDA tested grapefruit seed extract in 1990
with 200 patients who had internal parasitic
infections, they found that it gave more
symptomatic relief than any other treatment.
9) Diet
These are some dietary recommendations often
suggested to support the intestinal parasite
cleansing process:
- Temporarily avoid coffee, refined sugar,
alcohol, and refined foods.
- Eat anti-parasitic foods. Try eating more
raw garlic. Pineapple contains the digestive
enzyme bromelain. A diet rich in pineapple
can help to clear certain parasites such as
tapeworms. Papaya seeds contain enzymes that
help to digest protein. They can be chewed,
but watch out, they are as hot as mustard
seeds.
- Carrots, sweet potatoes, and squash are
some foods that are rich in beta carotene, a
precursor for vitamin A. Vitamin
A is thought to increase resistance to
penetration by larvae.Vitamin
C and zinc
also support the immune system
- Probiotics
such as Lactobacillus acidophilus,
Bifidobacteria, and L. bulgaricus can help
to rebuild beneficial intestinal bacteria.
- Tumeric
and cloves
are other spices that can help fight
parasites.
10) Intestinal cleansing
Intestinal cleansing involves the use of a
higher-fiber diet plus supplements such as psyllium husks,
citrus
pectin, papaya
extract, bentonite clay, activated
charcoal, pumpkin seeds, beet
root, and/or flaxseeds.

And let's face it, transfusions themselves
aren't the safest procedure to begin
with. Several studies that found that
transfusions increase your risk of heart
attack and death. The problem lies in
the fact that the oxygen-transporting efficacy
of stored blood begins to decay almost
immediately. This is because stored red
blood cells become deficient in nitric oxide,
thus limiting their ability to get oxygen to
tissues that need it. There is a 70
percent drop in the first day of
storage. By the twenty-first day, the
molecule is below the level of
detectability. In the U.S., red blood
cells can legally be stored up to 42 days
before blood banks are required to discard
them.
But it's even worse than that. Because
transfused blood is deficient in nitric oxide,
it actually sucks nitric oxide out of the
surrounding tissue to compensate. This
causes that tissue to constrict and become
deoxygenated. If that tissue happens to
be heart muscle, you have a real problem.
The bottom line is that transfusions should
be a last resort except, in fact, when they
are indeed the last resort.

5 truths
about surviving (and maybe even enjoying!)
your holiday season with the family
|
1. Before you
set foot on a plane/train/highway, figure out
how you want the holiday to go.
Most of us don't go into the holidays with a
strategic plan for how we'd like it to go.
Rather, we compose a mental script of how things
are LIKELY to go -- typically a full-length
caper packed with door slamming, kitchen
brawling, and possible police intervention.
But what we don't do is formulate is a clear
vision of what a festive, peaceful, and joyful
holiday would look like. We don't really think
about holidays or anything else this way;
rather, we flood our consciousness with memories
of How It Was In the Past.
Permit yourself a bit of fantasy -- what would a
NON-dysfunctional holiday look like? Or an ideal
holiday, even? How would everyone act? What
events would take place? Would it simply mean no
fighting between certain parties? Your parents
sitting peacefully in the same room? Have some
fun with this fantasy. Write it down, even. The
objective here isn't to create an unattainable
goal, or set you up for disappointment -- but
it's near impossible to put together a fun
holiday when you haven't even considered what
the phrase means.
2. Ask
not what your family should do to give you a
great holiday, but what you can do to make it
happen.
We're all absolutely amazing at identifying
what's wrong with other people. Particularly our
family members.
To give the whole thing a hint of irony, each of
us is likewise equipped with powerful blinders
to our own faults and shortcomings. Plus we
detest hearing about them from someone else.
We'll go to great lengths to avoid it. Our
brains have quite literally evolved to make us
fear death, pain, starvation, and 5 words:
"There's something wrong with you."
The kicker, of course, is that unless we turn
the fault-mirror on ourselves, we will see no
change in the way people act/react around us.
So what does all this mean for the holiday meal?
Your actions will, in large part, determine the
behavior of those around you. Which means that
if you would like your family's behavior to be
different, you'll have to start the chain
reaction yourself. There's no other option --
you simply cannot make everyone else act exactly
how they're supposed to in order to satisfy your
personal preferences (trust me -- I've tried).
Does this take work? Sure. It takes far
more drudgery to create happiness than it does
to complain about the infinite sources of
unhappiness.
3. You have a unique
superpower in your family -- use it
for good, not evil.
We all have some small adaptation
that helps everyone around us. Some skill
or talent that enables us to get along.
Similarly,
we all have a unique power in our
families. It might be a role that you
play, or a talent that no one else has.
One could be the clown -- to lighten
things up in a family full of
a-glass-broke-it-must-be-Armageddon types.
One could be the aesthete -- creating
beautiful food, flower arrangements,
paintings, etc. that everyone could enjoy.
The key is figuring out your superpower,
and then using it for good. You can make a
quip that gets everyone laughing, or you
can slash your relatives in half with a
barb -- the choice i
4. To get a great holiday,
all you really have to do is dole out
acknowledgment.
Being with your family can be an
exercise in unyielding repetition. We show
up at our parents' house, we fall
effortlessly into the same old behavior
patterns, our mouths spout the same
petulant complaints, our psyches fall into
the same state we've inhabited in that
house since we were in diapers.
And it
doesn't help that everyone else is exactly
the same, descending into their own
emotional baggage simultaneously. You can
see it in their faces as you look around
the table.
You're a
smart individual -- you know exactly
what's happening with each of your family
members. You know exactly where their
hurts lie, how to probe the old wounds,
what to say to set them off on a murderous
fray. But on the other side, you know what
they NEED in order to feel like whole and
complete human beings.
It all
boils down to acknowledgment -- telling
someone that you appreciate/admire/respect
something about them. Everyone wants this,
and almost no one ever gives it.
Especially to their families. Seriously --
we almost never do. We take the least
expensive thing we possess, and we lock
them away like a 12-carat diamond. It's
like driving a taco truck through a
Somalian village without ever stopping to
throw the starving kids a burrito. Which
you would never do, because you're not
heartless. And yet we march through the
holidays without ever once doling out a
kind word to our family members.
So try it
out. Release the Acknowledgment Minotaur
and let him tear through your living room.
Proffer acknowledgment to everyone who
steps through the door.
5.
Everything's more fun when you turn it
into a game.
Outside
of Hollywood and stand-up comedy, we don't
always treat concepts like "family" with
much fun. Rather, we treat them like
Atlas-type weights crushing our shoulders
and dragging us into Hell.
Still,
there's nothing stopping you from
lightening things up. And a great way to
do this is to turn the entire holiday
experience -- the travel, the awkward
interactions, the inevitable gaffes --
into one big game. Games are inherently
not life or death -- you can win, lose,
and play again indefinitely -- which is
why they're great for leeching out the
significance and emotional weight we
attach to concepts like "My Dysfunctional
Family." We play them to have a good time,
experience a range of emotions, and
develop the skills necessary to win. If
you approach your family holiday like you
would approach a game, the results could
be astounding. Think about it: You're the
Mario in your own universe of Fire Flowers
and Super Mushrooms and undermining
brothers-in-law. It's not your
chain-smoking, absinthian grandmother --
it's a Koopa Troopa begging for defeat (if
you think Super Mario Bros. is stupid,
just run with me on the metaphor -- and
accept that you're wrong).
The
kicker is that everyone wins in this
scenario -- if you're keeping it light and
enjoying yourself, the fun will trickle
down. And after a few hours of contagious
fun, who knows what could happen?
